Antique Copeland Parian Paul & Virginia Figure Group
A beautiful Victorian Parian porcelain figure group, modelled after the celebrated design by French sculptor Charles Cumberworth. Designed in 1846, this romantic composition shows Paul and Virginia seated closely together on a naturalistic rocky base, with Paul tenderly presenting Virginia with a small bird’s nest.
The unglazed white Parian porcelain has a softly marble-like appearance, bringing out the fine sculptural detail in the figures’ expressions, flowing garments, hands and delicate nest. Inspired by the celebrated novel Paul et Virginie, the subject captures themes of innocence, devotion and tragic love that made it a popular nineteenth-century artistic theme.
