Don Quixote & The Knight of the Rock

A Rare Set of Six Engravings

by William Hogarth (1697–1764)

Published 1756 (after designs c.1726)

Engravings on paper, mounted, framed and glazed

An exceptionally rare and important set of six engravings by William Hogarth, illustrating scenes from Don Quixote, including the celebrated Knight of the Rock episodes. Although the compositions were conceived circa 1726, this set was published in 1756, during Hogarth’s lifetime, and represents one of the most ambitious literary illustration projects of the 18th century.

The series demonstrates Hogarth’s unrivalled ability to fuse narrative drama with sharp observation and expressive characterisation. Each plate captures the absurdity, heroism, and pathos of Cervantes’ tale, rendered with Hogarth’s distinctive moral and satirical edge. A comparable set is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, underscoring the rarity and institutional significance of these works. This example is believed to be the second known complete set, with only one other recorded and a third untraced.
