Watercolour, Mother and Child, Antique, John Henry Mole (1814–1886)

Mother and Child in a Pastoral Landscape, Watercolour by J. H. Mole V.P.R.I.

A beautifully executed Victorian watercolour by the distinguished British artist John Henry Mole V.P.R.I., depicting a tender moment between a mother and her young daughter at the edge of a tranquil pastoral landscape. The mother, seated thoughtfully on a rustic bank, leans gently toward the child while listening attentively as the young girl, holding a string of beads, speaks with quiet seriousness. The composition conveys both emotional warmth and narrative charm, capturing a sensitive portrayal of maternal affection and childhood innocence.

Rendered with Mole’s characteristic delicacy of line and subtle modulation of colour, the figures are set against a softly receding countryside landscape, likely inspired by the rolling scenery of northern England. Trees and distant hills provide a calm and harmonious setting that enhances the quiet intimacy of the scene. The careful treatment of expression, drapery and light reflects Mole’s refined approach to narrative watercolour painting, for which he was highly regarded during the Victorian period.

John Henry Mole (1814–1886) was a respected British watercolourist and an important member of the New Society of Painters in Water Colours, later the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, serving as its Vice-President by 1884. His works are held in public collections throughout the United Kingdom and remain sought after by collectors of Victorian narrative and figure painting.

The watercolour remains in very good condition with well-preserved colours and fine detail. There is light, even age toning consistent with nineteenth-century works on paper. The mount is clean and sympathetic, and the gilt frame shows minor wear and patina consistent with age. Overall, the work presents very well and is ready to hang.

Dimensions: 26.5 x 20.5 inches (including glazed frame).
