Helmet, Original WWII British Zuckerman Civil Defence Steel, BMB 1941
Original WWII British Zuckerman Civil Defence Steel Helmet — BMB 1941
A genuine Second World War British Zuckerman Civil Defence helmet, dated 1941 and manufactured by Briggs Motor Bodies (BMB) — one of the principal wartime producers of this pattern. Officially designated the Civilian Protective Helmet, the Zuckerman was introduced in 1940 and widely issued to civil defence personnel across Britain during the Blitz, including rescue services, fire watchers, and air raid wardens.
Design & Purpose
Designed by scientist Professor Solly Zuckerman following research into blast and debris injuries, this helmet's characteristic deep bowl shape and short flared brim was engineered specifically to protect against falling masonry and shrapnel debris — the primary hazard faced by civilian defence workers during air raids. It is a distinctly British home front artefact, quite different in form and function from the military Mk II Brodie.
Construction & Markings
- Shell: Pressed steel construction with original paint surface
- Stamps: Shell and liner both stamped BMB 634 and dated 1941 — matching stamps on both components is a particularly desirable feature for collectors
- Liner: Original liner retained, confirming wartime production consistency
- Dimensions: Approx. 29 cm diameter
Condition
The exterior shows honest age-related wear, surface oxidation, and patina fully consistent with over 80 years of age and service use — all of which adds to its authenticity and historical character. A solid, displayable example.
