Antique Powder Flask: Indian Iron-Mounted Horn
Magnificent 19th-Century Utility and Artistry
This handsome and well-preserved antique Indian gunpowder flask (or horn) dates from the 19th century. Crafted from a large, polished horn, the piece features a pleasing crescent shape and is expertly fitted with dark, contrasting iron mounts.
The body of the horn has developed a rich, dark patina with natural variations, showcasing a lovely organic lustre and the signs of genuine age and use.
Functionality: The flask features practical iron fittings necessary for use with early firearms.
Mounts and Chain: A substantial iron chain connects the rim, which has been pierced to the inside curve of the buffalo horn, to a separate iron ring mounted at the tip. This chain allowed the flask to be easily carried or slung across the body.
Historical Appeal: The overall wear and the robust, utilitarian construction suggest this piece was well used, adding to its authentic appeal as a functional object from the colonial or princely states period in India.
This piece is an excellent addition for collectors of antique weaponry, militaria, Indian decorative arts, or functional folk art.
