Antique 19th-Century South Indian Bronze Figure of Lord Ganesh

Finely Cast Devotional Bronze · South India · 19th Century · Four-Armed Seated Pose

A superb and weighty South Indian bronze sculpture of Lord Ganesh — the beloved Hindu deity revered as the remover of obstacles, lord of beginnings, and embodiment of wisdom. Cast in the 19th century using the traditional lost-wax (cire perdue) method, this piece exemplifies the extraordinary skill of South Indian bronze founders whose tradition stretches back over a thousand years to the great Chola dynasty.

Ganesh is depicted in a dynamic, expressive seated posture with four arms, each holding traditional attributes symbolising protection, blessing, and spiritual strength. The serene facial expression, elaborate crown, and intricate surface ornamentation — including jewellery, sacred thread, and folded trunk — reflect the devotional precision and artistic mastery of the period. The rich, dark patina is consistent with age and authentic use.

These bronzes were not merely art objects — they were imbued with sacred presence, used in temple rituals, processions, and festivals, often adorned with textiles and flowers during ceremonies. Owning one is to hold a piece of living spiritual heritage.
