Pair of Continental Art Nouveau Bisque Porcelain Hanging Plaques with Classical Ladies

Late 19th / Early 20th Century | Likely Austrian or German | 35 × 34.5 cm each

A beautiful and highly decorative pair of Continental Art Nouveau style bisque porcelain hanging plaques, each exquisitely modelled in high relief with elegant classical maidens set within idyllic garden landscapes. Richly ornamented with applied floral borders, delicate gilt beading, and softly coloured pastel enamels, these plaques are exceptional examples of late nineteenth- to early twentieth-century Continental decorative porcelain.

One plaque depicts two graceful young women in a tranquil garden setting tending to a pair of white doves beside a decorative bowl, symbolising peace, purity, and affection. The companion plaque portrays an elegant lady standing beside a seated maiden playing a classical lyre, evoking themes of music, harmony, and the classical arts.

Each plaque is framed by an elegant Art Nouveau border adorned with applied blossoms, stylised scrolling stems, and delicate raised ornamentation. The finely modelled figures display remarkable attention to detail in their flowing garments, expressive facial features, and naturalistic poses, all enhanced with subtle hand-painted pastel tones and tasteful gilt decoration.

Likely produced in Continental Europe, possibly Austria or Germany, during the late nineteenth or early twentieth century, these plaques beautifully reflect the refined craftsmanship and romantic artistic influences of the Art Nouveau period.
