Modern British School Acrylic on Board Spate Huntermann “Dodo”

This striking modern British painting, titled Dodo, is by Spate Huntermann (1934–2014), the professional name of the artist Robert Hunt. Executed in acrylic on board, the composition presents a boldly stylised bird form set within a dynamic, abstracted landscape of flowing lines and layered colour.

The dodo is rendered with playful exaggeration and expressive movement, its form emerging from a richly patterned background of swirling shapes and earthy, saturated tones. The artist’s confident use of line and colour creates a sense of rhythm and visual energy, balancing figuration with abstraction in a distinctly modern idiom.

The work is signed to the lower right and labelled verso, and is presented within a clean, neutral mount that enhances its graphic impact. Measuring 56 × 51 cm overall, the painting has a strong presence while remaining well-suited to contemporary interiors.

Spate Huntermann was an active and respected figure in the British art world. He served as President of the United Society of Artists (2005–2008) and was a member of both the Dorking Group of Artists and the Suffolk Open Studios. In addition to his modern work, he was a successful portrait artist working in Cornwall for many years.

Acrylic on board, structurally sound. Paint surface in very good condition, with no visible losses. Colours remain strong and vibrant. Minor handling marks consistent with age and medium. Cleanly presented and ready to display. Overall, the work is presented very well.

Overall size 56 x 51 cm.
