A Celebrated Actress Immortalised in Miniature

A finely executed miniature portrait depicting Mrs Sarah Siddons (1755–1831), the most celebrated tragedienne of the Georgian stage, after the iconic 1785 portrait by Thomas Gainsborough. The sitter is portrayed in elegant profile, wearing a fashionable feathered hat and blue drapery, rendered in the refined neoclassical manner associated with late Georgian portraiture.

The Frame

The miniature is housed within an elaborate Rococo-style gilt frame, richly decorated with scrolling acanthus ornament and floral detailing — a fitting setting that amplifies the piece's strong decorative and period appeal.

The Portrait

  • Delicate facial modelling with finely painted costume details
  • Warm red ground, characteristic of the period
  • Cabinet-sized — ideal for display on a desk, shelf, or as part of a portrait collection

Historical Significance

Sarah Siddons was one of the most painted women of her era, immortalised by Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Lawrence. To own a portrait after Gainsborough is to hold a piece of Georgian cultural history — the theatre, the art world, and the fashionable society of 18th-century England distilled into a single exquisite object.

An appealing decorative work for collectors of portrait miniatures, theatrical memorabilia, Georgian art, or antique gilt-framed artworks.

Dimensions: approximately 19.5 × 18 cm.
